1 sheep, 2 sheep, 3 sheep... that might work, but there are even smarter tricks!

Tried-and-true methods for falling asleep more easily include counting sheep, mindfulness, and relaxation exercises… By focusing your attention, you distract yourself from the racing thoughts that keep you from falling asleep.

I’m happy to share these tips with my clients:

  1. Simulate
the REM phase When the body enters the dream phase, the eyes begin to move very quickly from top to bottom. This is also called the REM phase (the abbreviation stands for rapid eye movement). You can do this consciously and intentionally with your eyes closed. This tricks the brain into thinking it is already in this phase. With a little practice, we can consciously guide our brain into “sleep mode,” so to speak.
  2. Counting sheep the other way around
The usual way of counting sheep is often too easy. So count backward instead; this requires significantly more concentration. As you do so, focus on deep breathing and feel into every part of your body: head, chest, abdomen, legs, feet, and finally the soles of your feet. Soon the moment will come when you drift into a restful sleep.

A golden rule states that there are things in life we cannot change. Others, however, we can. It is wise to accept the former with equanimity and courageously change the latter.

So treat yourself to a well-deserved night’s rest in your thoughts!
