What materials are particularly suitable if I get too hot in bed?
The sleeping body produces heat at night. In addition, up to 50g of moisture per hour is released through the skin in the form of water vapor. During the warmer months, this is often a problem for people who sweat heavily, as approximately 70% of this moisture collects in the comforter. Many duvet fillings have high moisture absorption rates (e.g., wool 28%, silk 25%, or down 24%). However, how quickly the stored moisture is released into the room air varies greatly among these materials. Additionally, the different levels of breathability of the materials also affect the sleeping environment.
Modern synthetic fibers do not retain moisture (as in sports underwear) and release it directly into the room air. The sleeper stays drier; air with low moisture content feels less warm, which in turn reduces the body’s cooling response (sweating). The “tropical effect” disappears, allowing for a more restful sleep and reducing susceptibility to rheumatic issues that arise when an overheated, sweat-dampened body is exposed to cooler room air upon being covered.
