Leaving the window open while sleeping isn’t a good idea!

Can you only sleep with the window open and cool air? The idea that you can only sleep with fresh, cool air is a fallacy.

Air that is too dry

How fresh and healthy the air really is doesn’t depend on the cold bedroom temperature, but on the oxygen content at an ideal humidity level.
In cold temperatures, the air is too dry because cold air can absorb less moisture. Consequently, the mouth and mucous membranes dry out, which in turn promotes inflammation in the throat and impairs our breathing.

Tension

It is much better for your body if the window remains closed during the night, especially in winter. When the window is open, especially at low temperatures, cold air flows in through the open window, even if it is only slightly ajar. Cold air is heavier than warm air and therefore collects at the floor. Over the course of the night, a so-called “cold air pool” forms, reaching up to the level where we sleep. If you then cover yourself while sleeping—for example, because your blanket is too warm and you’re sweating underneath it—the warm, damp part of your body comes into contact with the cold air. The affected muscle areas contract, which can lead to tension or even rheumatic symptoms.
Plus, with the windows closed, you don’t waste unnecessary energy and save on heating costs.

Sleep tip: The right temperature for sleeping in winter

To wake up feeling refreshed even in winter and minimize tension and dryness of the mucous membranes, make sure to thoroughly ventilate your bedroom before going to sleep and then close the window again. The room temperature should not drop below 18°C, and a humidity level between 40% and 60% supports a good night’s sleep.

Tip:

If you feel too warm with the window closed, you can regulate the bed climate using temperature-regulating duvets.

If the humidity is too low, you can hang a wet bath towel in the bedroom as an immediate measure. For ideal humidity, a humidifier is recommended.
