Hard or soft mattress

Many people wonder whether it’s better to choose a firm or a soft mattress. To answer that, you first need to understand what is meant by firm or soft.

Does “soft” mean a sagging bed where I lie as if in a hammock, or does it mean adaptable and point-elastic?

When I imagine lying on my side on the floor, my entire body weight rests on my shoulders and pelvis because of the hard surface. My legs also pull downward to find enough support next to the wider pelvis. This causes the pelvis to bend, which also affects the lumbar region.

The same is true of a mattress that is too hard.

The surface cannot adapt to the body lying on it. The body must adapt to the surface, leading to anatomically incorrect sleeping positions. The muscles, especially in the back, must correct this incorrect position through tension. This tension eventually turns into pain. However, a soft mattress can only optimally relieve the body if the areas that need support, especially the waist, receive adequate support from the mattress and the slatted frame. A customized bed takes all these aspects into account.
