Deep back muscles

The deep back muscles include all muscles directly attached to the spine. This network of many small muscles prevents the body from tilting forward while walking upright, since the spine is located not in the center of the body but quite far back.

The muscles lie in several layers on top of one another and are additionally covered by the superficial back muscles. The deep back muscles are responsible for backward, forward, and sideways movement, as well as rotation of the spine. These muscles are the primary support for the spine during all movements throughout the day.

But even when lying down, these muscles are often still active. To prevent structural damage to the intervertebral discs or vertebral bodies, the deep back muscles correct the spine’s posture when the lying position is poor. If these muscles are regularly strained by corrective tension while sleeping, they will eventually become overloaded. This then manifests as back pain in the morning or during the night.

To allow the deep back muscles to relax during the night, a mattress must fit the sleeper’s body.
