Sleeping Like a Log

People who are regularly deprived of sleep at night or can only get a few hours of sleep are not all that rare. Many are not lucky enough to sleep through the night and regenerate. But with our tips, you’ll sleep like a log.

The Problem

Sleep is much more than the opposite of wakefulness. It is the time when the body and mind recover and prepare for the next day. The depth of sleep varies in a recurring cycle of four distinct phases. During the deep sleep phases, the body performs a great deal of regenerative work: it carries out repairs, completes digestion, and strengthens the immune system. It needs two to three hours of deep sleep per night to regenerate optimally. After each deep sleep phase, we approach the dream sleep phase. In this stage, known as the REM phase, we have the most dreams. While all muscles are relaxed, the brain is highly active.

On average, people wake up 28 times a night but cannot remember it the next day. This is in contrast to those who cannot fall asleep or stay asleep and lie awake in bed for hours. As a result, their bodies and minds do not recover sufficiently, which inevitably affects their health. Headaches, concentration problems, or daytime fatigue are the consequences.

Tips:

  • Don’t go to bed on an empty stomach, but don’t go to bed with a full one either. If you’re hungry or your organs are too busy digesting, it’s hard to fall asleep.
  • Regular bedtimes promote sleep. Our bodies thrive on a consistent rhythm.
  • Schedule a time to deal with your worries. Write down what’s on your mind and what needs to be done the next day. This will help you find the inner peace you need for a good night’s sleep.
  • After a stressful day, relax with a warm bath or loosen up your muscles with relaxation exercises.
  • Skip your afternoon nap if you can’t sleep at night.
