Reading in Bed

Reading in Bed

Are you one of those people who likes to read in bed? Perhaps you’ve also noticed that it can be very difficult to find a comfortable reading position. In that case, the question arises as to whether this might affect your sleep.

The Problem

First, it’s important to note that reading is an excellent way to fall asleep. It helps us unwind and prepare our minds for sleep. Unfortunately, many people can’t find a comfortable position for this in bed. If you lie on your back and hold your book up, the muscles in your neck and shoulders will inevitably tense up. The same problem occurs when lying on your side or stomach. So we read our book or magazine until we’re tired or can no longer find a comfortable reading position. By then, our neck and shoulder muscles have become tense, and we want to fall asleep relaxed—which, of course, isn’t possible.

Does that mean you shouldn’t read in bed? No, that’s not what it means at all. On the contrary, reading in the evening is recommended, but only in a relaxed, comfortable position.

Tips:

  • You should be able to read in a seated position.
  • Your neck and shoulder muscles should not be tense.
  • You shouldn’t have to lift your book, which would put your muscles under strain.
  • A bed that can be adjusted electrically or mechanically into a sitting position is ideal.
  • If you cannot read in a relaxed position in bed, then rather avoid doing so.
