Did you sleep like you were on "cloud nine" at the hotel?

Many customers tell us that they slept so wonderfully on vacation that they’re considering buying the exact same mattress—or even the whole bed....

Beware of this potential mistake! The fact that you slept well on vacation is usually not due to the bed alone.

Who hasn’t been there? The night before you arrive, the anticipation of the upcoming vacation is high. You’re so excited that you can’t fall asleep easily. Once you arrive at the hotel, you’re tired from the exciting and sometimes somewhat arduous journey. Gratefully, you sink into the wonderfully fresh hotel bed. So the first night is a bit unfamiliar, but you wake up in the morning totally relaxed, feeling well-rested and refreshed, as if on “cloud nine.” You might think that must surely be due to the great box spring bed. But other factors are at play as well.

The following factors can play a role here:

  • You’re tired and in need of a vacation (so your need for sleep is high enough)
  • You’re more relaxed because you’ve consciously left your daily routine and work behind, and your body and mind are fully tuned in to relaxation
  • The difference in altitude between home and your vacation destination contributes to us feeling a bit sluggish and tired, which helps us sleep better
  • If you go to the mountains, this is a blessing for allergy sufferers, as dust mites cannot survive at high altitudes
  • The fresh, white bedding contributes to a restful sleep; it promotes a pleasantly cool bed climate because it is undyed

The last point is somewhat paradoxical; we summarize it with the term “the hotel effect”:

  • In reality, you sleep less deeply in an unfamiliar environment, even if the relaxed feeling in the morning suggests the opposite. Because you are subconsciously more alert than in your own home, where you feel safest, you spend less time in deep sleep and move more frequently. As a result, you never remain in an unfavorable sleeping position for too long, which causes tension and pain.

So never forget the “hotel cloud nine effect” when you’re considering buying a bed after your vacation. A visit to a “Kompetenzzentrum Schmerzfrei Schlafen” for expert advice is definitely worth it!
